Fire department status update

South Green Lake Volunteer Fire Department (SGLVFD) has been given the green light to start full practices, says Fire Chief Peter McKie.

He notes the Fire Chiefs’ Association of British Columbia has just put out some relaxed guidelines for B.C. fire departments.

“Fire department members must still maintain social distancing and a maximum of 50 people can be in a group if space permits.

“COVID-19 precaution will also mean there is no sharing of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus or radios.”

Starting May 30, McKie says full practices will be held outside on a biweekly basis and there will be administrative meetings every month.

“Wipes, sanitizer and gloves will be placed at the doors, and all equipment will have to be cleaned after use.”

Recent presentations

Twenty SGLVFD members attended Natural Gas Safety and Electrical Safety presentations at the Fire Hall on May 9.

These are annual training requirements for the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) and WorkSafeBC.

The presentations were held in two different areas – upstairs training centre in the Fred Potter Memorial Fire Hall and the main Fire Hall – to maintain proper social distancing.

COVID-19 factors

The general status of the SGLVFD is the fire hall is in a state of lock-down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

McKie says they are following TNRD protocol and are locked down except for essential and emergency services (9-1-1 calls).

Essential services includes maintaining equipment at the Fire Hall – scheduled truck and equipment maintenance and tests once a week with a minimum of staff.

Firefighters will also do additional cleaning and decontamination when needed to ensure a safe work environment.

The fire chief adds firefighters, who returned from out-of-country, were required to complete their 14-day isolation.

Biweekly practices were discontinued until the COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed.

Officer meetings were held biweekly through conference and video calling through ZOOM.

While the SGLVFD will still respond to 9-1-1 callouts, it will not respond to medical callouts due to the provincial government’s guidelines, McKie says.

“They want Emergency Health Services to respond first, but we’re willing to assist if needed. We have the appropriate PPE and supplies to assist.”
