Thank you to everyone that supported the Firesmart cleanup at Access 8 in the Bravo neighborhood yesterday. We hauled 6 trailer loads of debris away to the Eco Depot. Also we would like to thank Danny Funk from the TNRD for helping out and supplying the food as well as BBQing the burgers and hotdogs. It was a great success. Your Firesmart Team

INFORMATION BULLETIN

Two new wildfires sparked in the Cariboo

WILLIAMS LAKE – The BC Wildfire Service is responding to two new wildfires in the Cariboo Fire Centre. Both fires are suspected to be human-caused.

One of these incidents is in the Anahim’s Flat area and is about 2.6 hectares in size. Ten fire fighters responded last night and are on scene again today working to contain the fire.

The second wildfire is located in the Canoe Creek area and is estimated at 60 hectares in size. The Cariboo Fire Centre is on site assessing the fire to determine further action. No structures or property are threatened at this time.

All open burning, other than campfires, will be prohibited throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre as of noon on Monday, April 4. The BC Wildfire Service urges people planning to conduct an open burn before April 4 to use caution to help reduce the number of preventable wildfires.

Windy conditions are expected throughout the upcoming weekend. Before lighting any fire, please watch for changing weather conditions and have enough people, water and hand tools ready to keep your fire under control.

Be advised that if your fire escapes, you may be liable for fire suppression costs and damages. In 2009, for example, a member of the public in the Cariboo was fined just under $900,000 for causing a wildfire, due to unsafe open burning practices. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that they are burning in a safe, responsible manner that is in accordance with current restrictions.

To report a wildfire, abandoned campfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or dial *5555 on a cellphone.
